BACKGROUND
Arkana Labs is a cutting-edge laboratory specializing in high-powered microscopic imagery for renal pathology and transplants. Arkana Labs aims to equip doctors with the results to deliver the most effective patient care. As pathologists, they recognize the significance of the timeframe between a patient's biopsy and the results' arrival, considering it the most extended period in the patient's journey.
PROBLEM
The current mobile web application, designed for customers to access lab results on personal devices, requires reevaluating its architecture and capabilities to deliver a modern and user-friendly experience. The app primarily reflects data from the core Laboratory Information System (LIS) and lacks the necessary design and user flow for a robust user experience.
SOLUTION
Reevaluate and redesign the mobile web application's architecture and capabilities to create a modern, intuitive user experience and interface. Improve the relationship between the application and the core Laboratory Information System (LIS).
GOALS
1
Improve UX and Efficiency
User flows will be more optimized, simplifying navigation to make it effortless for users to locate and access features.
2
UI Updates
Incorporating more brand elements and intuitive interactions, the updated UI will provide a better user experience and improves usability.
3
Improve Security
Implementing robust security protocols and security measures when users log in or create an account ensures that patient data and privacy will be safeguarded in a secure environment.
DEFINING THE MAP
Discovery
  • Opportunity for the team to internalize and immerse themselves in the Arkana Labs domain.
  • Understand existing capabilities, features, use cases, etc.
  • Understand personas and perform user interviews.
  • Opportunity statements based on user pain points and existing UX issues.
Synthesis
  • Architects and engineering team begin designing architecture.
  • Execution plan- product roadmap and artifacts needed to build and deliver the product.
  • Steelthread with storyboard
  • Wireframes and initial designs
  • Visual design and design system library.
Delivery
  • High Fidelity Wireframes
  • Clickable prototype for steel thread.
  • Final Architecture Diagrams, App and APIs, Cloud Environments, Automated Tests, Code Repository, and Security.
  • Deliver all Figma designs and assets.
Ongoing Maintenance and Support
  • App QA and support.
  • Defect remediation/patches
Discovery & Opportunity
PAIN POINTS
During our in-depth review of the previous app version, we identified several critical pain points:
  • Clinicians needed to work across multiple hospital systems in different states and need to manually switch states in the backend by calling support.
  • Clinicians need an easier way to switch patient groups.
  • Clinicians receive notifications for all of their group’s patients without any means to designate if the patient is actually theirs.
  • No ability to manually reset password- have to go through support
  • No option for email notifications.
  • Results do not show “most recent” by default
  • Messages have no timestamps, not linked to a patient and not categorized.
OPPORTUNITIES & ITERATIONS PROCESS
At the beginning of each iteration, we established clear objectives and goals. Regular meetings ensured progress, addressed challenges, and kept everyone aligned.

By analyzing the pain points we identified, we discovered opportunities to optimize the user experience and enhance the app's functionality and UI. Based on the feedback received and pain points gathered, the team planned for the next iteration. This led to several significant breakthroughs that shaped our MVP:
[Discovery & Opportunities Board]
THE MVP
To reevaluate and redesign the current mobile web application for accessing lab results, we aim to create a modern, intuitive user experience and interface by improving its architecture and capabilities, particularly its integration with the core Laboratory Information System (LIS). This redesign will focus improving these key areas:
1
Onboarding Process
4
Inbox and Message Management
7
Settings
2
Homepage and Patient Management
5
Search Functionality
3
Patient Detail Screen
6
All Patient List
1
Onboarding Process
The updated onboarding process provides clear information and guides users through essential steps, allowing them to customize notifications and accept required policies.
2
Homepage & Patient Management
Physicians can now conveniently view patient details & scan images, switch practices, and receive alerts for new updates in the revised homepage.
3
Patient Detail Screen
The redesigned patient detail screen allows physicians to view scan images in greater detail, presents updates and patient information clearly for quick scanning, and improved visual hierarchy.
4
Inbox and Message Management
In the redesigned inbox, messages are categorized by support messages, amendment updates and report updates. Pressing report updates will bring users directly to the patient detail page. We also introduced a contact support button on this page for ease of access.
5
Search Functionality
The redesigned search now includes recent search history and advanced search options, allowing physicians to specify criteria such as name, date of birth, visit dates, gender, age range and attending physicians for more precise results. These improvements significantly improved how physicians retrieve patient information.
6
All Patient List
The newly added "All Patients" page is a list of patients that physicians can sort, filter, and view within their medical group, providing a comprehensive list of their patients.
7
Settings
The redesigned settings page now provides users a wide range of valuable options. Users can reset their password without contacting customer support, personalize biometric and notification preferences, access policies and terms of agreement, manage offline settings, and conveniently reach the help center for support and FAQs.
Prototype & Design System
I had the opportunity to prototype the high-fidelity design to demonstrate its implementation to the engineering team. Additionally, I created the design system and it's documentation for app and made sure it aligned it with the brand guidelines that was already established on their marketing website.
WHAT'S NEXT
Redesigning the Arkana Labs mobile app has been an enlightening experience as I got to experience various facets of product development. Throughout this transformative journey with Arkana Labs, I've gained a better understanding of creating tangible and innovation solutions grounded in real user needs and pain points.

The redesigned Arkana app not only surpassed client expectations but also empowered the Arkana team to focus on more complex challenges and improving their backend systems. The app is set to significantly boost user satisfaction and drive a substantial increase in user retention.
